The Gravensteen is a charming building in the historical heart of Leiden, close to Pieters´ Church. It is the remaining of the medieval residence of the Counts of Holland that once stood here. The famous count Floris V was born here. What is left of the residence is a part of the countely prison and the donjon.
In later ages, the building was used by the local authorities as a court of justice and prison. In this period, the beautiful classicistic wings, were added.
Now, the Gravensteen is used by the Faculty of Law of Leiden University.
